Five Steps to Cultivating a Culture of Responsible GenAI Use in Your Classroom
Introduction:
Undoubtedly, the GenAI tools we use will shift and evolve as the months pass. For me, creating a culture of responsible use is less about mastering any particular tool or app and more about developing our students' AI awareness—their realization that AI is a powerful force that can steal as much from them as it can offer, if they allow it. I want them to understand how AI can enhance their learning and how it can undermine it should they chronically misuse it. By following these five steps, I have observed my own students develop a more critical, rather than consumptive, relationship with GenAI.
Step One: Course Outline
When I introduce the course outline, I explain that as a class we will learn how to leverage GenAI responsibly. At this point, I introduce the four levels of integration we will follow: No AI Permitted, Idea Starter, Feedback Helper, and Work Partner. The goal is to establish a classroom culture of responsible use as early as possible—waiting only undermines that intention. This initial conversation doesn't have to be especially long; it's meant to give students a preview for what is to come.
Step Two: Student GenAI Agreement Form
Before the first formal assessment of a learning period, we review the Student GenAI Agreement together. It articulates what responsible use entails, what misuse looks like, and the consequences that accompany it. The consequences are not meant to be punitive, but rather a mechanism to guide students toward better habits. After explaining the agreement and answering all questions pertaining to it, I have students sign the document and hand it back in. I would recommend emailing a copy home to parents, so they're aware of expectations as well.
Step Three: Project Introduction
When introducing a new project, I spend time explaining how GenAI could be used for that project. Each project I assign has been stamped with the level of GenAI permitted. Even if the project is marked "No AI Permitted," I explain the reasoning behind that level. The "why" behind each integration level connects to the learning intention. For instance, if I am assessing students' understanding of punctuation, I wouldn’t allow AI to be used, as it would undoubtedly undermine my assessment.
Step Four: Modeling Responsible Use
Whenever I allow GenAI for a specific purpose, I model to my students what that level of use looks like. Sometimes I demo the technology on the board; other times I project specific prompts that align with the intended level (see example below). I also like to show students when and how I leverage AI in my own life and teaching practice. For example, I might note when images or graphics were generated with Copilot or how I edit my writing's punctuation without losing my authentic voice.
Step Five: Disclosure
Finally, when students use AI for a project, I ask them to reveal their use through a disclosure statement. This step promotes transparency and responsibility. By acknowledging what app they used, the prompts they inputted, and the purpose, students establish routines of responsible use that naturally shape the wider class culture. I typically employ a QR code system with a straightforward Microsoft Form, though a brief paper reflection post-project works just as well.
Final Thoughts:
For myself, teaching students how to engage with AI technology isn't necessarily an endorsement of the technology itself. Rather, it's an acknowledgement that GenAI exists, that I understand its transformative power, and that I feel an urgency to help my students navigate it. For me, this is as much a moral position as it is a pedagogical one. As an educator, I want to prepare my students for the world that is—and teaching them to navigate GenAI goes hand in hand with that conviction.
