Five Steps to Cultivating a Culture of Responsible GenAI Use in Your Classroom

Introduction: Undoubtedly, the GenAI tools we use will shift and evolve as the months pass. For me, creating a culture of responsible use is less about mastering any particular tool or app and more about developing our students' AI awareness—their realization that AI is a powerful force that can steal as much from them as it can offer, if they allow it. I want them to understand how AI can enhance their learning and how it can undermine it should they chronically misuse it. By following these five steps, I have observed my own students develop a more critical, rather than consumptive, relationship with GenAI. Step One: Course Outline When I introduce the course outline, I explain that as a class we will learn how to leverage GenAI responsibly. At this point, I introduce the four levels of integration we will follow: No AI Permitted, Idea Starter, Feedback Helper, and Work Partner.
